This for Jack Conant's work Spring 2010 semester. And beyond.
For the first assignment I let the students pick one topic from four to make an image or a series of Images. Jack Chose #2 to explore. This was one of his images.
Pick from one of the following topics and explore it by doing
research, writing a one page paper on what you learned and how
you feel you can create an image or images to represent.
1. Fashion statement. How does the media influence how we feel
about ourselves. Are their things that are forced on us by mass
cultural iconography and what can you say for or against(or
indifferent to)?
2. How come so many pictures of naked people? What is the role of
the nude in art and in society. Has it become something perverted, or
was it always perverted--or is it a means of exploring deeper issues
of sex, gender, equality. Is it something that is just subject matter or
is it a signifier for our culture and who we are?
3. Community activism and social agenda. What do people do? Are
we living in an era of social numbness or of heightened social awareness?
Is the community activly participating in its own causes or are we hiding
behind cell phones and texting and facebook interactions. Can you explore
the roles of people in a community?
4. Stereotypes and phonies. In this age of political correctness have we
gone too far? or have we not gone far enough yet? What are stereotypes
and how do they help us understand each other or prevent us from understanding
each other?
